R.I. Film Fest to honor Anthony Quinn; also gets grant from motion-picture Academy

PrintPROVIDENCE, R.I. — Flickers: The Rhode Island International Film Festival plans a salute to actor Anthony Quinn on the 100th anniversary of his birth, beginning in February and running through November.

The project will include free screenings of Quinn’s films at libraries across the state, panel discussions, a student essay contest, and a video competition for area college students to re-create a scene from among five of Quinn’s films that will be showcased throughout the year

Quinn, who died in 2001, lived in Bristol, R.I., toward the end of his life.

The Festival also has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, the organization that hands out the Oscars.
The grant will support “Flickers Short Film Retrospective: Journeys in Filmmaking,” a look back at films that played at the festival over the past 18 years and went on to be nominated for (or win) Oscars.

The grant will allow for screenings and a master class featuring a panel of Academy staff, filmmakers and scholars. The programming will take place during next year’s festival, Aug. 4-9.
